Pasila
Last weekend, I travelled to Helsinki to visit Kalle Id and his wife Maria, to look at architecture in and around Helsinki and to travel on some Baltic ferries in the winter ice. This blog entry will be in five parts, beginning with my visit to Kalle and Maria's flat in the marvellous 1960s-built Helsinki new town suburb of Pasila. Unlike the Scottish new towns, Pasila is densely developed and with an absolute separation between traffic and pedestrians. The former is kept on a road and tram network at 'ground' level, whereas the latter circulate at 'first floor' height.
